What Changed
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode now summarize answers at the top of the results page, and more searchers get what they need without visiting any website. Similarweb data reported in 2025 found that 77% of Google searches showing an AI Overview ended without a click to an external site (Let's Data Science). More recently, Chartbeat data showed news publishers' traffic from Google fell around 40% between July 2025 and July 2026 (EWN). In October, Google said it is adding more visible links and source references inside AI Mode, but it has not published data on how that affects click-through rates.
If your site traffic has quietly dropped this year while your rankings look fine, this is very likely why.
Which Traffic Is Actually at Risk
Not all searches are affected equally. The pattern is consistent across most analyses:
- Most at risk: simple factual and "what is" queries, definitions, quick how-tos, and generic tips. The AI answer is often good enough.
- Less at risk: high-intent searches like "emergency plumber near me," "book a med spa consultation Halifax," or "web design agency quote." People still need to call, book, or buy, so they still click.
- Local results: the map pack and Google Business Profile remain a primary path for local service searches.
In other words, the blog posts that used to bring in casual readers are losing clicks, while the pages that turn visitors into customers matter more than ever.
Strategy 1: Get Cited Inside the AI Answer
Being the source an AI answer references keeps your brand in front of the searcher even without a click. One analysis found that only about 14% of URLs cited in AI Mode also ranked in the classic top 10 for the same query (Mean CEO), so citation is not just a reward for ranking first. Pages that get cited tend to:
- Answer one question clearly in the first two or three sentences under a matching heading.
- Include specific facts: numbers, steps, prices, locations, and dates.
- Use clean structure: headings, short paragraphs, lists, and tables.
- Carry structured data (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, Article) and a clear author.
Strategy 2: Shift Effort to High-Intent Pages
Put your best work into the pages that sell: service pages, location pages, pricing, case studies, and comparison pages. Each should answer the buyer's real questions (cost, timeline, process, proof) and make the next step obvious. One well-built service page for "kitchen renovation Halifax" will usually outperform ten generic tips articles in leads.
Strategy 3: Convert the Visitors You Still Get
When traffic falls, conversion rate becomes your growth lever. Visitors who click past an AI answer are often further along and more motivated. Make sure they can act fast:
- A clear call to action above the fold on every service page.
- Click-to-call and a short form, not a ten-field questionnaire.
- Proof near the CTA: reviews, logos, before-and-after results.
- Fast mobile load times. A slow page wastes the click you worked hard to earn.
Strategy 4: Build Brand Searches
AI answers rarely replace a search for your actual business name. Reviews, local press, social content, email newsletters, and partnerships all push more people to search for you directly, and branded searches are the most reliable traffic you can have in an AI-first search world.
Strategy 5: Measure What Matters
Sessions alone will look worse this year for almost everyone. Track leads, calls, bookings, and revenue by landing page instead. In Google Search Console, compare impressions to clicks: rising impressions with falling clicks usually means you are being shown, and possibly cited, in AI answers. That is visibility, not failure.
The Bottom Line
Zero-click search shrinks the top of the funnel, but it does not remove the need for a great website. It raises the bar. Businesses that answer questions clearly, invest in their money pages, and convert visitors well will keep winning customers while competitors wonder where their traffic went.
